Serpierite

Ca(Cu,Zn)4(SO4)2(OH)6·3H2O
Monoclinic heart IMA grandfathered

Serpierite is a hydrated calcium copper zinc sulfate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula Ca(Cu,Zn)4(SO4)2(OH)6·3H2O. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and is classified under the Strunz classification as 7.DD.30. The mineral is typically found in a fibrous or radiating habit and exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster. It is usually green to greenish-blue in color, with a hardness of approximately 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale and a relatively low density. Serpierite is a rare secondary mineral that forms in oxidized zones of copper-zinc sulfide deposits and is part of the sulfate mineral group.

Etymology

Serpierite is named after Giovanni Battista Serpieri, an Italian mineralogist. The mineral was recognized and named in his honor due to his contributions to mineralogy.

Geological genesis

Serpierite forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zones of copper-zinc sulfide deposits. It typically develops through the alteration of primary sulfide minerals under surface or near-surface conditions, where chemical weathering and oxidation processes take place.

Spiritual meaning and crystal therapy
