Ringwoodite

SiMg2O4
Cubic heart IMA approved

Ringwoodite is a mineral with the chemical formula silicon magnesium oxide, SiMg2O4. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and belongs to the space group Fd-3m. Classified as a tectosilicate in the Strunz system (9.AC.15) and in the Dana classification as 51.3.3.1, ringwoodite is a high-pressure polymorph of olivine. It exhibits a glassy to subadamantine luster and typically appears green to brown in color. With a hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale and a density of around 3.9 to 4.1 g/cm³, it is a key mineral in understanding the Earth's mantle.

Etymology

Ringwoodite is named after Ted Ringwood, an Australian mineral physicist who made significant contributions to the study of high-pressure minerals. It was first approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in 1969.

Geological genesis

As a high-pressure polymorph of olivine, ringwoodite forms under extreme conditions in the Earth's upper mantle, typically at depths between 410 and 660 kilometers. It is associated with the transformation of minerals under high pressure and temperature, making it a key mineral in mantle geochemistry.

Spiritual meaning and crystal therapy

Spiritual meaning

Ringwoodite is traditionally associated with deep emotional healing and spiritual awakening. It is believed to help one connect with higher consciousness and foster a sense of inner peace and clarity.

Esoteric properties

Ringwoodite is said to enhance emotional balance, encourage self-reflection, and support spiritual growth. It is associated with calming the mind and promoting a sense of harmony and understanding.

Associated chakra

This stone is traditionally linked with the heart chakra, due to its potential to open the heart to compassion and unconditional love, helping to align one's emotional and spiritual energies.

Crystal therapy use

In crystal therapy, ringwoodite is often used in meditation or placed on the heart chakra to support emotional healing. It may also be worn as jewelry or carried to promote a sense of calm and spiritual connection.
