Prehnite

Orthorhombic heart IMA grandfathered

Prehnite is a hydrous calcium aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula Ca₂Al₂Si₃O₁₀(OH)₂. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and is classified as a phyllosilicate in the Strunz system (9.DP.20) and as a nesosilicate in the Dana system (72.1.3.1). The mineral typically exhibits a dull to vitreous luster, with colors ranging from white to green, yellow, or gray. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of approximately 2.8 to 3.0. Prehnite is commonly found in fine-grained, compact forms and is often associated with low-temperature hydrothermal processes.
