Palygorskite

(Mg,Al)5(Si,Al)8O20(OH)2·8H2O
Monoclinic heart IMA grandfathered

Palygorskite is a hydrous magnesium aluminum phyllosilicate mineral with the chemical formula (Mg,Al)5(Si,Al)8O20(OH)2·8H2O. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and belongs to the Strunz classification 9.EE.20 and the Dana classification 74.3.1a.1. The mineral exhibits a waxy to dull luster, typically appears white, gray, or pale green in color, and has a hardness of 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale. Its density is relatively low, ranging from 2.0 to 2.3 g/cm³. Palygorskite is a member of the sepiolite-palygorskite group, a class of fibrous, layered phyllosilicates.

Etymology

The mineral is named after Palygorskaya, a region in Russia where it was first discovered.

Geological genesis

Palygorskite typically forms in arid environments through the diagenetic alteration of magnesium-rich silicates, often in evaporite deposits. It is commonly associated with other clay minerals and is linked to sedimentary processes.

Occurrence

Palygorskite is found in evaporite deposits and arid sedimentary environments. It is commonly associated with other clay minerals and forms in low-temperature, diagenetic conditions.
