Marcasite

FeS2
Orthorhombic root IMA grandfathered

Marcasite is a sulfide mineral with the chemical formula iron disulfide. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is classified as a sulfide in the Strunz system (2.EB.10a) and in the Dana system (2.12.2.1). It is often confused with pyrite, but differs in crystal habit and physical properties. Marcasite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, a specific gravity of approximately 4.8 to 5.1, and a metallic luster. It typically appears pale yellow to brassy yellow in color. Unlike pyrite, marcasite is more brittle and tends to weather easily, making it less stable under surface conditions.
