Libethenite

Cu2PO4(OH)
Orthorhombic heart IMA grandfathered

Libethenite is a copper phosphate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula Cu2PO4(OH). It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is classified as a phosphate mineral in the Strunz system (8.BB.30) and as a member of the apatite group in the Dana classification (41.6.6.2). The mineral has a relatively low Mohs hardness of 4, a density of approximately 3.6 to 3.8 g/cm³, and exhibits a vitreous to dull luster. It typically appears in shades of green, ranging from light to dark. Libethenite is commonly found in the oxidation zones of copper deposits.

Etymology

Libethenite is named after the village of Ľubietová in Slovakia, where the mineral was first discovered.

Geological genesis

Libethenite forms in the oxidation zones of copper-bearing deposits, typically as a secondary mineral through the alteration of primary copper sulfides.

Occurrence

The type locality for libethenite is Ľubietová, Slovakia. It is also found in other copper-rich oxidation environments worldwide.
