Ilvaite

CaFe3⁺Fe22(Si2O7)O(OH)
Orthorhombic root IMA grandfathered

Ilvaite is a rare calcium iron silicate mineral with the chemical formula CaFe^3⁺Fe^2⁺2(Si2O7)O(OH). It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and is classified as a nesosilicate in the Strunz system (9.BE.07) and a member of the epidote group in the Dana classification (56.2.3.3). The mineral typically exhibits a black streak and a dull to subvitreous luster. It is usually dark in color, with a hardness of approximately 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and a moderate density. Ilvaite is notable for its complex composition, containing both ferric and ferrous iron, and is relatively uncommon in the mineral world.

Etymology

Ilvaite is named after the island of Elba, where it was first discovered. The mineral was recognized and described from this locality, which is also the origin of its name.
