Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula calcium calcium pentaborate silicate hydroxide. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and is classified as a borosilicate in the Strunz system (6.CB.20) and as a member of the Dana classification 25.3.5.1. The mineral typically exhibits a white color with a white streak and a waxy to dull luster. It has a relatively low hardness of around 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and a moderate density. Howlite is known for its fine-grained, massive, or fibrous appearance and is commonly used for carving due to its softness and ease of workability.
