Franklinite

ZnFe32O4
Cubic root IMA grandfathered

Franklinite is a cubic mineral with the chemical formula zinc iron(III) oxide, ZnFe^3⁺2O4. It belongs to the spinel group of minerals and is classified as a normal spinel in the Strunz system (4.BB.05) and as a member of the oxide minerals in the Dana classification (7.2.2.4). Franklinite typically exhibits an opaque appearance with a metallic luster, and it is usually black in color. It has a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and a relatively high density. The mineral forms in the cubic crystal system and is known for its isometric crystal habit.

Etymology

Franklinite is named after the location where it was first identified, Franklin, New Jersey, USA. The mineral was recognized and named in honor of this type locality.

Geological genesis

Franklinite is typically associated with metamorphic and igneous environments, particularly in skarn deposits and contact metamorphic zones where zinc-rich and iron-rich fluids interact. It forms under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions, often in association with other oxide and sulfide minerals.

Occurrence

Franklinite is most commonly found in the Franklin district of New Jersey, USA, which is its type locality. It is also known from other zinc-iron-rich metamorphic and igneous regions where suitable geochemical conditions exist.

Spiritual meaning and crystal therapy
