Fayalite is a mineral species with the chemical formula iron(II) silicate, Fe2SiO4. It belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system and is classified as an inosilicate in the Strunz system (9.AC.05) and a nesosilicate in the Dana system (51.3.1.1). The mineral typically exhibits a white streak and a vitreous to greasy luster. It is usually dark green to black in color and has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, with a density of around 3.9 to 4.1 g/cm³. Fayalite is a member of the olivine group, which consists of iron- and magnesium-rich silicates commonly found in igneous and metamorphic rocks.

Etymology

Fayalite is named after Faial Island, one of the Azores, where the mineral was first identified.
