Dypingite

Mg5(CO3)4(OH)2·5H2O
heart IMA approved

Dypingite is a hydrous magnesium carbonate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula magnesium pentahydrate tetracarbonate dihydroxide. It belongs to the nesosilicate class in the Strunz classification system, specifically group 5.DA.05. Dypingite crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system and is typically found as fine-grained, fibrous, or botryoidal aggregates. It exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster and is usually white to pale green in color. With a hardness of approximately 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and a relatively low density, dypingite is a soft, lightweight mineral. It is not commonly encountered in nature and is of interest primarily to mineral collectors.

Geological genesis

As a hydrous magnesium carbonate, dypingite is likely formed under low-temperature, sedimentary or hydrothermal conditions. It is typically associated with the alteration of magnesium-rich minerals in the presence of water and carbon dioxide.
