The mineral is typically white to pale green in color and exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster. It has a hardness of approximately 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale and a specific gravity of around 2.8 to 3.0. Bertrandite is notable for its role as a source of beryllium and is classified under the Strunz system as 9.BD.05 and the Dana system as 56.1.1.1.

Etymology
