It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and is classified as a nesosilicate within the garnet group. Andradite typically exhibits a white streak and a vitreous luster. Its hardness ranges around 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and it has a relatively high density. The mineral is notable for its dark coloration, often appearing black or dark green.
